Favorite Place: The Wichita Mountains

One of my favorite places in Oklahoma is the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. I didn't grow up in this part of the country, so when my husband suggested we go camp there to take pictures of the stars for my daughter's science fair project on light pollution, I had no idea what to expect. It turns out to be not only beautiful, but one of the only places where I can completely relax and leave everything behind me.

Having no Internet connection doesn't bother me in the slightest when we're in the mountains, hiking, spending time by a campfire, and looking at the stars.

Someday I hope to have more time to spend in the mountains, and other great camping and stargazing sites around our state. We have crossed Robber's Cave State Park off our list, but there are many more places I would like to visit in the future.

  1. You are the first Wichita Mountains post this semester, Angela... but you will not be the last. It is always nice to see an Oklahoma place show up in these favorite places posts. And of course a place like Robber's Cave is just begging to have a story told about it... so maybe you will choose that as a setting for a story you write sometime this semester; there are tales of robbers and treasure all over the world, and such a story could certainly be "translated" to Oklahoma. :-)

  2. I actually don’t think I’ve been to the Wichita Mountains! Your pictures are beautiful. In the past, I’ve complained about not having anything to do in Oklahoma. I guess now I have an idea to try out. When I am with my friends and family, I spend very little time on my phone. My dad and my boyfriend are terrible about being on Twitter or Facebook when we’re together. It would be nice to go on a trip where we could all disconnect and actually talk to one another.
